Lead Teacher & Educational Program Coordinator

About the Position:

The Education & Tutoring Program at Ronald McDonald House Charities Philadelphia Region (RMHC Philly) provides individualized educational support and tutoring to children ages 5-18 staying in the House. The Lead Teacher/Educational Program Coordinator will instruct as well as oversee a team consisting of staff, volunteers, and student interns. This position will also supervise the development, administration, and coordination of educational services provided to our families. Key to the success of the Lead Teacher/Educational Program Coordinator is:

  1. Understanding the unique educational needs of children and families impacted by medical illness
  2. Balancing educational, operational, and administrative responsibilities
  3. Possessing an ever-present demeanor of sensitivity to family and organizational needs, professionalism, discretion, and compassion

A flexible work schedule is necessary with day, evening and occasional weekend hours required.

This is a 12-month position.

Essential Duties:

  • Teach children across multiple grade, content, and skill areas in individual and/or group settings as appropriate
  • Oversee the continued development and implementation of all educational programming to match the unique needs of guest children and families, including school-year individualized sessions and summer/holiday programs
  • Lead the onboarding, scheduling, and educational plans for families to ensure essential educational needs of families are met
  • Serve as primary liaison with families’ school contacts to create and implement educational plans for children enrolled in program that are consistent with the home classroom’s progress and materials, yet adapted for the child’s current ability
  • Organize enrichment opportunities for students such as science experiments, virtual field trips, and speakers
  • Ensure that families are informed on and comfortable with all Education & Tutoring policies, programming, and staff
  • Develop and oversee English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) services at both RMHC Philly locations
  • Provide orientation, training, and ongoing supervision of Education & Tutoring program staff (staff, volunteers, and student interns) to ensure they maintain a positive and compassionate, family-focused attitude, philosophy, and work ethic relative to RMHC Philadelphia’s mission
  • Develop an internship program through ongoing relationships with local University partners to provide meaningful opportunities for eligible students
  • Maintain the highest level of adherence in HIPAA/confidentiality, informed consent, and boundaries for self and team members
  • Develop and manage policies and procedures for the Education & Tutoring program in accordance with RMHC Philly and hospital partners
  • Provide a supportive and culturally competent environment to the diverse families, children, staff, and volunteers of RMHC Philly
  • Assist families with becoming informed and engaged in RMHC Philly programs and resources
  • Manage electronic data tracking system to monitor student engagement
  • Coordinate ordering, delivery, inventory, and budget requests for program’s supplies
  • Support the marketing of the Education & Tutoring program
  • Represent RMHC Philadelphia Educational & Tutoring Program with community partners and guest families’ educational contacts

Qualifications:

  • 5 years of teaching experience, preferably in a wide variety of subjects, ages, and ability levels
  • Experience or willingness to work with children (or siblings) or experiencing medical challenges and/or special needs
  • Experience in educational program design
  • Previous supervisory experience
  • Pennsylvania required clearances – Federal Background Check, PA State Criminal Records Check and PA Child Abuse History Clearance

  • Comfort with uncertainty and flexibility in regard to families’ schedules and health conditions

  • Ability to work effectively with persons of diverse backgrounds
  • Maintain strong professional boundaries when working with families
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office – Outlook, Word, Excel
  • Ability to travel independently between RMHC Philadelphia locations as needed

  • Moderate sedentary office work. Frequently required to sit and spend moderate amount of time on the computer.
  • Must be willing and able to travel between RMHC Philadelphia locations and other locations using personal vehicle or alternative
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel; talk or hear.
  • Must be physically capable of carrying up to 35 lbs.
