Part-Time Professional Educator

Status: Part-Time, Non-Exempt
Schedule: 12-month position, 20-24 hours/week, day, evening and occasional weekend hours

Job Summary:

The Education & Tutoring Program at Ronald McDonald House Charities Philadelphia Region (RMHC Philly) provides individualized and small group educational support and tutoring to children ages 5-18 staying in the House. Students enrolled in the program include child patients and siblings staying at the House for the duration of medical treatment at local hospitals.

The Part-Time Professional Educator will instruct as well as collaborate with the program’s coordinator and team consisting of volunteers and student interns. This position will also plan, implement, and oversee the individualized sessions, while collaborating with the team to help plan and implement the new Audrey’s Scholars Camp Program (an ACA accredited program that brings academics and Social Emotional Learning together in a one room schoolhouse format). Key to the success of the Part-Time Educator is:

  1. Understanding the unique educational needs of children and families impacted by medical illness
  2. Balancing educational, operational, and administrative responsibilities
  3. Possessing an ever-present demeanor of sensitivity to family and organizational needs, professionalism, discretion, and compassion

This 12-month position requires a flexible work schedule of 20–24 hours per week, including day, evening, and occasional weekend hours. Work schedule will be dependent on the ever-changing needs of students and families and their availability.

Essential Duties:

  • Teach children across multiple grades, content, and skill areas in individual and/or group settings as appropriate
  • Plan, prep, and deliver customized lessons and academic interventions
  • Oversee the flow of the individualized sessions program
  • Serve as an on-call substitute teacher as needed for the Audrey’s Scholars Camp Program
  • Collaborate with colleagues to help develop engaging lesson activities and contribute to curriculum design
  • Track student progress using data and observations to inform instruction
  • Communicate professionally and respectfully with students and families via in-person interactions and digital communications
  • Ensure that families are informed and comfortable with all Education & Tutoring policies, programming, and staff
  • Use and update online platforms and digital tools as part of instructional delivery and tracking
  • Maintain the highest level of adherence in HIPAA/confidentiality, informed consent, and boundaries for self and team members
  • Provide a supportive and culturally competent environment to the diverse families, children, staff, and volunteers of RMHC Philly
  • Assist families with becoming informed and engaged in RMHC Philly programs and resources
  • Manage electronic data tracking systems to monitor student engagement
  • Represent RMHC Philadelphia Educational & Tutoring Program with community partners and guest families’ educational contacts
  • Work alongside student Co-Ops and Interns

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education or a related field (required)
  • Teaching experience, preferably in a wide variety of subjects, ages, and ability levels
  • Experience incorporating digital educational platforms into sessions
  • Experience or willingness to work with children (or siblings) experiencing medical challenges and/or special needs
  • Experience in educational program design and familiarity with differentiated instruction and academic accommodations
  • Pennsylvania required clearances – Federal Background Check, PA State Criminal Records Check and PA Child Abuse History Clearance

  • Knowledge of effective educational strategies, accommodations, and adaptations to address school reentry and learning outcomes for children with serious health conditions
  • Comfort with uncertainty and flexibility regarding families’ schedules and health conditions
  • Strong education program design and implementation skills
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds
  • Maintain strong professional boundaries when working with families
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office – Outlook, Word, Excel and Google Suite
  • Willingness and ability to learn new digital curriculum tools and learning platforms
  • Ability to travel independently between RMHC Philadelphia locations as needed
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team

  • Moderate sedentary office work. Frequently required to sit and spend a moderate amount of time on the computer.
  • Must be willing and able to travel between RMHC Philadelphia locations and other locations using personal vehicle or alternative
  • Capable of using a computer or tablet for extended periods.
  • Maintain energy and focus during multiple sessions per day.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel; talk or hear.
  • Must be physically capable of carrying up to 35 lbs.
