The Power of a Little Change

For Donna Abbonizio, one of RMHC Philly’s board members and a McDonald’s owner-operator, the Ronald McDonald House is more than a charity—it’s a cause that has touched her heart deeply. She first became personally involved in 2007, when McDonald’s operators rallied to support the building of the Ronald McDonald House at Front & Erie, located on the campus of St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children. Donna helped spearhead fundraising efforts with the regional Women’s Network through a softball tournament, and the $35,000 they raised built a laundry room in the new House. In addition to being a volunteer van driver, Donna continues to champion RMHC Philly through McDonald’s Round-Up program. Round-Up offers customers the chance to “round up” their total to the nearest dollar, with the difference going directly to benefit the charity. Donna explains, “It’s such an easy way for both our crew and customers to make a difference. All it takes is asking, ‘Would you like to round up?’ and a simple ‘yes’ from the customer.” The funds raised through Round-Up directly support the operations of the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House, ensuring that our families with seriously ill children have a place to stay close to the hospital. “Being able to support families in their time of need means everything to me,” Donna shares. “It’s just part of my heart. I feel so fortunate to be able to give back this way.” Donna is proud to see her McDonald’s crew embrace the program, which raises money daily. She encourages everyone to join in. “It’s a small gesture, but it has such a big impact. Every time you’re at McDonald’s, remember to round up—it’s one of the simplest ways to help.” With advocates like Donna leading the way, the Round-Up program ensures that the Ronald McDonald House can continue its mission of supporting families when they need it most.
